Neil Basil : Patient Choice
What is Patient Choice all about?
Patient Choice Business is a new type of healthcare company: it only provides products and services that enhance quality of life for patients and profits go to charities that deliver innovative patient support projects in the UK and around the world. Patient Choice earns its income from the NHS through its appliance prescription service, Patient Choice Delivery. Currently the market for prescription ostomy products and delivery services is dominated by multinational companies, meaning patients often won’t realise the full range of choices available to them.
What is the social impact?
The pharmaceutical industry has always attracted controversy, and with the supply of critical treatments and essential medical products providing unprecedented margins. Patient Choice’s prescription home delivery service for all ostomy appliances is driven by the value of instant and impartial product information, empowering individual patients to make their own choices about their own care with the support of clinical professionals. All trading profits from Patient Choice Delivery go to funding projects to support patients in the UK and abroad via the Patient Choice Foundation.
Who are the people involved?
Neil founded national charity Ostomy Lifestyle in 2007, and has grown it into the country’s largest provider of Helpline support and information to people affected by stoma surgery, as well as training courses for local support groups and healthcare professionals, and an international aid project providing hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of medical appliances in its first year. Ostomy Lifestyle’s flagship Underwear & Swimwear Show has inspired tens of thousands of people to feel more confident after stoma surgery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqQ1mwnQTVQ
Neil now advises charities on modernising and using technology to increase impact and more cost effectively achieve their aims. Neil is supported by specialists in Stoma Care Nursing and patient advocates, as well as experts in finance, charity management, helpline management, social media and web development.
What are the future plans?
Patient Choice will expand its website to make detailed and accurate information available across the country, and deliver more one-to-one patient care in local areas.
