UnLtd has worked with the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) since 2009 to grow a movement of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) capable of finding, funding and supporting staff, students and recent graduates, with entrepreneurial solutions to societal problems.
Today we are hosting our Lead The Change event in London. And we’re asking this question:
How do we embed a culture of
social entrepreneurship in higher education?
For the past year UnLtd has supported 56 Higher Education Institutions in England to take up the challenge of finding and supporting social entrepreneurs within their institutions.
The programme continues to be independently monitored and evaluated by the Social Enterprise University Enterprise Network (SEUEN) with award data still coming in, currently the HE support programme has made around 400 funding awards, with over 50% to students, 25% to staff and 10% graduates.
And we want to go further, to make an understanding of social enterprise a key part of higher education.
The next phase of the our work with Higher Education Institutions will focus on growing social leadership, system development and knowledge exchange with the objectives of enabling HEIs to become stronger ‘social institutions’, embedding social entrepreneurship into the mainstream.
There aren’t enough resources to offer professional support to every start-up and growing social entrepreneur that needs it. And so we think that part of the solution lies in networks and peer to peer relationships.
To work towards enabling critical mass in the HEI sector the programme will amplify the impact from the first two programmes and deliver a strategic national programme with learning, knowledge exchange, skills and technology sharing, network and quality systems development at its core.
In partnership with the HE and wider sectors, we will develop and strengthen the National Learning and Knowledge Network, and a national Learning Centre to build the capability framework needed to achieve these outcomes.
