Bristol is home to an estimated 5000 Somali people, of which most are refugees who have settled there within the last 10 years. The majority speak very little English, are not familiar with the UK education system, and have children who are underachieving at school. Ahmed Duale, Ahmed Abdullahi and Layla Ismalla wish to improve the current situation. In order to help the Somali population the group plan to produce a bilingual information and advice pack that will help parents understand the education system, and will give advice on how families can support their children both in the home and school. The project will organise focus groups of parents to help make the pack more user-friendly and relevant. This is an extremely important project, and its benefits will be widely felt through the Somalian population in Bristol. The three founding members of the group are themselves parents and are able to appreciate the problems facing both parents and children from Somalia within the UK education system.
