Learn about the UnLtd social venture that is teaming up with Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville to tackle food poverty

Innovative social venture Foodinate has teamed up with GG Events and Catering, owned by footballing legends Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs, to tackle food poverty.

The partnership, the first of its kind for the social enterprise, means for every single person attending an event booked through GG Events and Catering, Foodinate can ensure a hot, nourishing meal is provided for a local person in need at no extra cost. The packages are available at locations such as Hotel Football, the National Football Museum, Manchester Catherdral and Salford City FC.

Foodinate aims to create a sustainable impact on food poverty in the UK, teaming-up with restaurants and event and catering companies to ensure that every Foodinate-branded food item bought in a participating establishment results in a meal for a local person in need. Since launching its pilot study in September 2015, the innovative not-for-profit organisation has secured over 23,000 meals for people in need, that are served at a number of beneficiary centres including Mustard Tree in Manchester city centre, which provides hot, nutricious food for its homeless visitors.

GG Events and Catering is the first events partnership where Foodinate is included as standard and at no extra cost to the client. City centre establishment 1761 and The Lead Station in Chorlton have both very recently signed up to the scheme, as has The Studio Venue Company and now Foodinate is operating in six cities across the UK, and is looking to expand further by forming partnerships with national restaurant chains over the next 12 months.

Each event and catering venue signed up to the Foodinate scheme agrees to work approximately £1 into the margin to cover the cost of the donated meal, so that a pre-selected local food-giving charity can provide a hot, nourishing meal for someone in need.

Foodinate’s 25 year old founder, Caroline Stevenson, came up with the idea for Foodinate after seeing first hand that the level of need had increased:

“Growing up in Manchester, I felt so angry seeing the increasing number of people sleeping by the sides of the road, begging for money and food. It’s crazy to think that we live in the seventh richest country in the world, yet more than 13 million people are living below the poverty line. With one in six parents in the UK reporting having gone without food themselves so they can afford to feed their families, I knew there was a social need for my venture. I wanted to create a sustainable impact on this enormous issue and Foodinate aims to do just that.”

Gary Neville said: “When we heard about the Foodinate scheme, we knew it was something we wanted our events and catering company to be involved with. Homelessness is a serious problem and if we can help make a difference, we will. Providing free meals to people through GG Events and Catering is important to us  – we have lots of different events lined up for this year, we’re growing and getting more venues on board. For our clients booking events through us to know they are also making a difference in the city, is also very important.”
