TRANSFORM AGEINGCREATING A BETTER EXPERIENCE OF AGEING
Transform Ageing aims to revolutionise the approach to health, wellbeing and social care for people in later life, starting in the south-west of England.
Bringing together people in later life, social entrepreneurs and commissioners of health and care services, Transform Ageing will define, develop and deliver new people-centred solutions that better support the needs and aspirations of older people.
WHY TRANSFORM AGEING IS NEEDED
The UK is undergoing a demographic shift with potentially far-reaching consequences for society, the economy and public services provision. A vastly improved life expectancy, one of the great triumphs of the last century, looks set to be one of the great challenges of this one.
We need innovations that will reduce demand for services through preventative approaches, tackle causes rather than symptoms and help people to be better prepared for the challenges of later life. We need to build these innovations in collaboration with people in later life and their communities.
Through a knowledge-based, collaborative effort to reimagine what it means to have a good later life, we will transform the experience of ageing, breed systemic change and create a replicable, sustainable model for services all over the UK.
HOW TRANSFORM AGEING WORKS
Transform Ageing ensures that we find the best innovations to change the lives of people in later life and that they reach them as quickly as possible.
- We enable people in later life and their support network to feel able to contribute to how and what services are commissioned in their community.
- We bring together people in later life and social entrepreneurs with ideas to transform ageing.
- We back high potential social ventures from across the country at start up and scale up, offering a comprehensive package of funding and support.
- We work with local healthcare commissioners to drive adoption and create impact.
- We will convene a national network of supporters to contribute to and learn from our work.
The Transform Ageing team has been working to connect the needs and desires of local people in later-life, with the innovations and ideas of social entrepreneurs.
We have developed six innovation briefs for ambitious social entrepreneurs to apply their creative expertise to in Somerset, Devon, Torbay and Cornwall.
Steps to a positive future
People in later life have positive experiences of ageing
Mobility and transport
Enhancing independence and wellbeing through improved mobility
Supporting people to prepare for life changes
Caring about carers
Supporting, valuing and celebrating carers
Right information, right time
Making information accessible, relevant and meaningful
Creating opportunities for people in later life to connect with other people, communities and activities
Each innovation brief was developed in collaboration with local people to capture their perspectives, experiences and insights into what will make a difference in their communities. Applicants will need to describe how they will meet the outcomes of one of the innovation briefs.
The briefs are designed to encourage early stage social entrepreneurs from the south-west, and scale it level social entrepreneurs from around the UK, to launch new services or products in the region that will directly meet the needs and desires of local people.

APPLY FOR AN AWARD
Can you help us tackle one of the innovation briefs? We’re looking for social entrepreneurs with ideas to transform the experience of ageing, whether that is the lives of people in later life, their family, friends or carers.
We’re looking for entrepreneurs with an idea as well as more established social ventures that are looking to scale their business. The programme will run in the south-west of England (Devon, Torbay, Cornwall and Somerset).
The programme is in the south-west, a largely rural area. We are particularly keen to work with social entrepreneurs who have ideas and solutions which will support people in later life in these rural communities.
We are supporting early stage social entrepreneurs and those who are ready to scale:
Early stage awards
Do It Awards are designed to help you turn your ideas into real ventures. We provide 1-to-1 support, connections to specialist advisors and funding.
Grow It Awards provide support to those who have proven their commitment and have successful ventures which are ready to grow or become self-sustaining.
Inspire Awards are for local people improving the experience of ageing; sharing knowledge, experience and ideas with others to turn new ideas into action that will improve later life. Activity must be delivered in the SW in Devon, Torbay, Somerset or Cornwall and must benefit people in later life.
To apply for an award please read the list of criteria to make sure your application will be suitable.
Scale it Awards are aimed at established social ventures, who are ready to scale up and require investment to do so. These social entrepreneurs are ready to further their impact by taking on grant funding, expert business support and potentially raising investment.
Up to £50,000 of grant funding is available alongside bespoke support and help to raise further investment.
